- Pontypool
- 2008
- Directed by Bruce McDonald
It is highly recommended to go in as blind as possible.
Pontypool is a world class exercise in building tension and mystery. From the first second, the gripping cold open locks my focus in. The sound design and brilliant rambling script are enchanting.

- Possession
- 1981
- Dir. by Andrzej Żuławski
A harrowing story, dwelling on a melting pot of themes, love & hate, divorce & commitment, pregnancy & miscarriage. Isabelle Adjani inventing acting in that one scene in the tunnel.

- Alien
- 1979
- Dir. by Ridley Scott
A movie unlikely to need any introduction or justification. The set design of this movie is immaculate. Not to mention the legendary creature design.

- Pumpkinhead
- 1988
- Dir. by Stan Winston
Please don't let the seemingly low budget fool you. This is not just bargain bin DVD fodder. Pumpkinhead is a very beautiful modern fairytale analyzing the bitter, fruitless nature of revenge and how it ruins the lives of everyone involved.
Stan Winston is a legendary creature and makeup effect artist, most well known (IMO) for his work on T2, Constantine and Interview With a Vampire. This is his only feature length film though, I believe, and he proves he can direct. The mood, atmosphere, colour and lighting are top notch in every scene that matters and it just heightens the impact of this original fable.

- The Company of Wolves
- 1984
- Dir. by Neil Jordan
Speaking of fairytales, I'm very fond of them. The Company of Wolves is a fantastic riff on Little Red Riding Hood. It's beautifully shot, moody and full of mist.
And it has the best werewolf tf sequences I've ever seen.
